Integrating Scenic
This week, we began work on the Scenic Tool and completed the first working version of textured FBX import. Prevision can now bring an external 3D model into the venue with its textures attached. That capability opens the door to a much broader production workflow, where scenic teams can work with their own models instead of rebuilding everything inside the application.
The import system accounted for more than 27 hours of development. It ran three hours and 20 minutes over its original estimate, which is reasonable for a foundational feature touching file handling, geometry, materials, and the in-venue experience. The first version is already doing real work. We now have a base to refine rather than a blank page.
The rest of the release was unusually efficient. Nine tasks had both estimated and recorded completion times. Together, they took 34 hours and 32 minutes against a forecast of 39 hours and 15 minutes. Six finished under estimate, including two fixes that collapsed from multi-hour projections into a few minutes of work.
Projector output is more useful from the moment equipment enters a model. Newly spawned projectors now send a default test pattern even when no NDI source has been assigned. The test grid is also available as a permanent option in the NDI dropdown. This gives users an immediate way to check framing, coverage, and alignment without setting up an external source first.
NDI discovery received an important fix as well. Previously, a source that was offline when Prevision launched could remain unavailable after it came online. Active sources can now appear without requiring the application to be restarted.
Several editing problems were cleared out of the PJX workflow. Editing and reselecting a projector no longer wipes its assigned lenses, and projector changes now appear without forcing the user to select the object again. The remote is blocked from opening until the required projector and lens options exist, preventing users from entering an incomplete control state.
Projector dimensions are now entered in inches instead of feet, which better reflects how real equipment is specified and measured. Some ratio behavior still needs refinement, but the core unit change is complete.
The Transform Widget now displays the selected projector’s name. The PJX title layout was also adjusted so the name is left-aligned and the exit control sits at the opposite edge. A remaining fill issue in the title button has been identified for a later pass.
We also investigated the large number of Blueprint runtime errors appearing during use. After the cleanup, those errors are no longer appearing in testing. Scenic-profile permissions were tightened at the same time, preventing those users from opening the projector tool.
Prevision v0.33.10 represents a useful shift in scope. Projector planning remains central, but the product can now begin accepting scenic geometry from the tools designers already use. That is the start of the Scenic Tool, and it is the most consequential development in this release.
